The History

The Mézes family can trace its roots to the clan of Hermann von Nürnberg (other families of the clan: House of Lackovic, Bakó de Szebenye and Makray de Felpestes), who arrived in Hungary in 995 together with Giselle of Bavaria by the myth. According to the coat of arms of the Herman(y) clan, the roots can trace back to the Grafen v. Raabs. The first known generation of the Mézes family got estates in Zemplén, Sáros and Abaúj, later in Bihar royal counties in the 13th century (Mézes, Ragyolc, Zebenye, Golop, Ősi) and they held some estates in county Vas and Zala. The Mézes de Mézes family has an older, called Mézes de Mézes and a younger, called Mézes de Debreczen branches.

The name Mézes is from the village of Mézes in Zemplén county, the family got it in 1239., but lost it in the 15th century. Later, the village disappeared, was destroyed by the Ottoman wars.
